What is Digilocker?
DigiLocker is an initiative of the Govt. of India by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for providing citizens access to authentic digital documents via a digital document wallet.
Digital Locker is aimed at eliminating the usage of physical documents and enabling sharing of e-documents across government agencies via a mechanism to verify “authenticity” of the documents online. The fetched documents via DigiLocker system are issued by the issuing authority and digitally signed by them. For eg: Aadhaar is directly issued by UIDAI and the document is digitally signed by UIDAI.
The issued documents in DigiLocker system are deemed to be at par with original physical documents as per Rule 9A of the Information Technology (Preservation and Retention of Information by Intermediaries providing Digital Locker facilities) Rules, 2016 notified on February 8, 2017 vide G.S.R. 711(E).
